Ink signature, to which he has added his home state (New Hampshire)
Signature: "Henry W. Blair/New Hampshire", 7¼X2½. Henry William Blair (1834-1920) served in the Union army during the Civil War, rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel. A Republican, he represented New Hampshire in the US House of Representatives (1875-1879, 1893-1895) and Senate (1979-1891). He introduced the first Prohibition amendment in the House, and chaired the Education and Labor Committee in the Senate. In 1891, President Harrison appointed him Minister Plenipotentiary to China, but the Chinese government refused to accept him, on grounds that he had "bitterly abused China" during immigration debates in the Senate. Left edge ragged from previous binding. Top left corner missing. Pencil note (unknown hand) at upper right corner. Lightly toned at edges. Otherwise, fine condition.
