Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882) was an American poet and linguist. He
graduated from Bowdoin College at age 18 so adept at languages that he became
Professor of Modern Languages there (1829-1835). While studying European
languages overseas (1825-1829, 1835-1836), he was particularly influenced by
German Romanticism. As a member of Harvard's language staff (1836-1854), he
published his first poetic volume, Voices in the Night (1839) and the
heartfelt Evangeline: A Tale of Acadie (1847). After 1854,
Longfellow devoted his time to writing such works as The Song of
Hiawatha (1855), a poetic masterpiece. Lightly soiled, else fine.
