Signature: "Henry W. Longfellow./1881.", 4x2 card. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882) was an American poet and linguist. He graduated from Bowdoin College at age 18 so adept at languages that he became Professor of Modern Languages there (1829-1835). While studying European languages overseas (1825-1829, 1835-1836), he was particularly influenced by German Romanticism. As a member of Harvard's language staff (1836-1854), he published his first poetic volume, Voices in the Night (1839) and the heartfelt Evangeline: A Tale of Acadie (1847). After 1854, Longfellow devoted his time to writing such works as The Song of Hiawatha (1855), a poetic masterpiece. Lightly soiled, else fine. Framed in the Gallery of History style: 22½x16½.
