HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW.Signature: "Yours truly/Henry W.
Longfellow.1873.", 4¼x2¼. American poet and linguist Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
(1807-1882) signed this card in 1873, a time of his life when he had achieved wide acclaim and
financial success. The following year, he published The Hanging of the Crane. Longfellow had
begun publishing his work while he was on the language staff at Harvard University
(1836-1854). This period produced the poetic volume, Voices in the Night (1839), and
Evangeline: A Tale of Acadie (1847), which established his popularity among his
contemporaries. After 1854, Longfellow devoted his time to writing, penning such classics as
The Song of Hiawatha (1955), a poetic masterpiece, and Tales of a Wayside Inn (1863), which
contained his famous poem, "Paul Revere's Ride". An 1825 graduate of Bowdoin College,
Longfellow had studied European languages overseas until 1829, then became Professor of
Modern Languages at his alma mater (1829-1856), where he was influenced by German
Romanticism. His last poems were published posthumously in the 1882 book, In the Harbor.
