Signature: "Henry Ward Beecher/May. 1885".With pencil notations on
verso in unknown hand.3¼x2¼ card mounted to paper. Beecher
(1813-1887, born in Litchfield, Connecticut) was the brother of author
Harriet Beecher Stowe. He graduated from Amherst in 1834 and attended Lane
Theological Seminary, Cincinnati. After two pastorates in Indiana, he accepted a
call in 1847 to the newly organized Plymouth Church (Congregational) in
Brooklyn, N.Y. Beecher was a leader in the antislavery movement, a proponent
of woman suffrage and an advocate of the theory of evolution. Every
important issue of the day was discussed on his platform, and he was one of
the most influential speakers of his day. Lightly toned and rippled.

condition.
