HENRY WARD BEECHER
Beecher handwrote, signed and dated this letter in 1869 to inform the recipient that he can't go out on a lecture circuit because he doesn't lecture in the winter "save in one or two special cases".
Autograph letter signed: "H W Beecher", 1 page, 3¾x4¾. 1869 November 3. Addressed to "Jr". In full: "Dear Jr I cannot go out on the route which you represent - I do not lecture this winter save in one or two special cases. Yours". Beecher (1813-1887) was the brother of author Harriet Beecher Stowe. He graduated from Amherst in 1834 and attended Lane Theological Seminary, Cincinnati. After two pastorates in Indiana, he accepted a call in 1847 to the newly organized Plymouth Church (Congregational) in Brooklyn, N.Y. Beecher was a leader in the antislavery movement, a proponent of woman suffrage and an advocate of the theory of evolution. Every important issue of the day was discussed on his platform, and he was one of the most influential speakers of his day. Lightly toned and creased. Rectangular shading at upper right blank margin. Discoloration from tape in corners, which barely touch signature. Adhesive remnants on verso (no show-through). Folded once and unfolded. Otherwise, fine condition.
