Beecher signed and dated this piece of paper in Brooklyn in 1879. Mounted to an album page with a small b/w magazine photo of Beecher.
Signature "Henry Ward Beecher/July 3. 1879 -/Brooklyn N. Y." 4¾x1¾ paper mounted to 8½x11 cardstock album page with rounded right corners. Album page has blue ink and pencil notations in unknown hand. 1¼x2 b/w magazine or encyclopedia photo mounted to page. Beecher (1813-1887, born in Litchfield, Connecticut) was the brother of author Harriet Beecher Stowe. He graduated from Amherst in 1834 and attended Lane Theological Seminary, Cincinnati. After two pastorates in Indiana, he accepted a call in 1847 to the newly organized Plymouth Church (Congregational) in Brooklyn, N.Y. Beecher was a leader in the antislavery movement, a proponent of woman suffrage and an advocate of the theory of evolution. Every important issue of the day was discussed on his platform, and he was one of the most influential speakers of his day. Signature is lightly toned, stained and soiled. Paper loss in upper corners, with small piece missing from upper right corner. Album page is lightly toned, stained, soiled, and creased. Three binder holes with rust stains on left edge. Lightly discolored at bottom edge. Otherwise in fine condition.
