HENRYK SZERYNG and WALTER SUSSKIND
Album leaf inscribed and signed by Szeryng, and signed on verso by Susskind (1966)
Inscribed Signature: "To/Stella/cordially/Henryk/Szeryng/Dec '66", 5½x4 orange album leaf. Also signed on verso: "With best wishes/Walter/Susskind/Dec 66". Polish-born violin virtuoso HENRYK SZERYNG (1918-1988) made his solo debut, a Brahms violin concerto with the Warsaw Philharmonic, in 1933. During World War II Szeryng, fluent in 7 languages, was an interpreter for the Polish government in exile. Becoming a Mexican citizen in 1946, Szeryng resumed touring to great acclaim. His recordings include violin sonatas by Bach, Beethoven and Brahms. Szerying owned two Stradivarius violins before giving both away as gifts: one to Prince Rainier of Monaco, and the other the "King David Strad," to the State of Israel. WALTER SUSSKIND (1913-1980), born in Prague, became a British subject in 1946. During World War II he was the pianist with the Czech Trio, a chamber ensemble. His greatest fame came as a conductor, however. He conducted, successively, the Carl Rosa Opera Company, the Scottish Orchestra, and the symphony orchestras of Melbourne, Toronto and St Louis. Left edge ragged from previous binding. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
