HERB ADAMS
The centerfield who briefly played for the Chicago White Sox pens this letter to a fan
explaining how his wartime service got in the way of what might have been a successful
Major League career
Autograph Letter signed: "Herb Adams" 1p, 8½x11. To “Dear Dennis” In full: "Regarding
the main obstacle that I incountered (sic) in a successful big league career probably was
being drafted & sent to Korea in 1950. It was in the middle of my second year with White
sox (sic). I spent 5½ months in an Army Hospital in Japan & lost my center field job to Jim
Busby. I played 7 yrs. longer in High minors but never get another chance inspite (sic) of some
excellent years in 3AAA & 2AA Ball. Such is the fortunes of life." "P.S. Never thought of running
to Canada". Herb Adams (1928-2012) played in five games for the 1948 Chicago White
Sox and 56 games in 1949, never really securing a steady centerfield job in Chicago. He had
appeared in only 34 games in 1950 when he was drafted at age 22. His lifetime batting
average in the Majors, with over 95 games and 337 at bats, was .261. Lightly creased.
