Typed Note signed: "Herb", 1 page, 5½x7. San Francisco, California,
1992 March 19. On letterhead of "San Francisco Chronicle" to
actress/comedienne Phyllis Diller. In full: "I loved your cheery
letter and I love you. Keep doin' it, as it were. Your love slave". Herb
Caen (1916-1997) began his "It's News to Me" column in the San Francisco
Chronicle in 1938, writing it six days a week for nearly sixty years. In 1996,
he received a Pulitzer Prize in Journalism "for his extraordinary and
continuing contribution as a voice and conscience of his city." His books
included Baghdad-On-The-Bay (1949) and One Man's San Francisco
(1976). Lightly creased. Faint ¾-inch gray streak to left of signature.
