HERB JEFFRIES
Signed autograph note to Radio/TV host George Sanders beside a magazine notice of his singing engagement, which also features a reproduced photo of him.
Autograph Note signed: "To George Sooo many year an still friends/Herb Jeffries", 7½x8¼ magazine page affixed to 7¾x10 album leaf (2 surfaces). Page from the Portland Greeter, a hotel/motel guide to local events. Small reproduced photo of Jeffries is captioned with a notice of his singing engagement, along with Tempest Storm, at Portland's Ho Ti Supper Club. The addressee, radio/TV host George Sanders, is also pictured in an unrelated article promoting his local radio and TV shows. Herb Jeffries (1913-2014), a deep baritone, sang with Duke Ellington in the 1940s and still sings today at jazz festivals and charity events. During the era of segregated movie theaters, Jeffries starred in several Westerns aimed at African-American audiences, beginning with Harlem on the Prairie (1937). These appearances gained him the nickname "the Bronze Buckaroo," a title he reprised in a 1995 Nashville record album, The Bronze Buckaroo Rides Again. (Jeffries' ancestry is quite diverse: Ethiopian, French Canadian, Irish and Italian.) George R. Sanders, originally a disc jockey, became a prominent radio/TV interview host, first in Los Angeles and later in Portland. Left edge ragged from previous binding. Paper and adhesive residue on verso. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
