His signature on a typescript from his official citation on his 1985 Nobel Prize in Chemistry
Typescript signed: "Herbert A. Hauptman", 1p, 8½x11. Titled: "The Nobel Prize in Chemistry - 1985". Cites the basis for the award to Hauptman and to Jerome Karle (of the U.S. Naval Research Lab, Washington, D.C., who did not sign.) In full: "For their outstanding achievements in the development of direct methods for the determination of crystal structures. They developed the mathematical techniques through which X-ray crystallography can be used directly to deduce the three-dimensional structure of natural substances vital to the chemistry of the human body and of drugs that can be used to treat various ailments." Mathematician Herbert Aaron Hauptman (1917-2011) of the State University of New York at Buffalo, continued to improve and refine methods which are now routinely used to analyze chemical structures. Until his death in 2011, he served as President of the Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute as well as Research Professor in the Department of Biophysical Sciences. Author of over 170 publications, he was elected to the National Academy of Science in 1988. Slightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
