Typescript signed: "Herbert A. Hauptman", 1p, 8½x11.
Titled: "The Nobel Prize in Chemistry - 1985". Cites the basis for the
award to Hauptman and to Jerome Karle (of the U.S. Naval Research Lab,
Washington, D.C., who did not sign.) In full: "For their outstanding
achievements in the development of direct methods for the determination of
crystal structures. They developed the mathematical techniques through which
X-ray crystallography can be used directly to deduce the three-dimensional
structure of natural substances vital to the chemistry of the human body and of
drugs that can be used to treat various ailments." Mathematician Herbert
Aaron Hauptman (1917-2011) of the State University of New York at Buffalo,
continued to improve and refine methods which are now routinely used to analyze
chemical structures. Until his death in 2011, he served as President of the
Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute as well as Research Professor in
the Department of Biophysical Sciences. Author of over 170 publications, he was
elected to the National Academy of Science in 1988. Slightly creased. Otherwise,
