HERBERT A.L. FISHER
Handwritten, signed letter from the English historian and politician saying he fears he will be unable to attend an event due to "medical labours", and inviting the recipient to join him for dinner. Dated March 16, 1940, a month and two days before his death!
Autograph letter signed: "H A L Fisher", in black ink, 5½x3½ affixed to a 5¾x3½ card. March 16, 1940. In part: "I fear [illegible] I cannot count in being better at the [illegible] from my medical labours on [illegible] at 6 pm. It would be superb to [illegible] buy 6.30 am if that would suit you and I have [illegible] you via Allen to join us for dinner afterwards". Herbert A.L. Fisher (1865-1940) was an English historian and politician, serving as President of the Board of Education from 1916 to 1922. Before his political career, Fisher tutored at the University of Oxford and was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sheffield. He was made a Member of Parliament under Sheffield Hallam in 1916, with his appointment to the Board of Education following shortly after. He resigned from Parliament in 1926, retiring from politics and becoming a warden of New College, Oxford until his death. He went on to publish several historical works, including an award winning biography on James Bryce. Water droplets across, distorting some writing, but still legible. Toned. Slightly soiled. Corners slightly worn and creased. Paper fragments on verso of card. Otherwise, fine condition.
