Bates (1905-1974) was known primarily for two types of fiction: stories
set in the rural Midlands, and stories of World War II. His rural fiction
included three well-known novels which inspired popular British TV series
(The Darling Buds of May and My Uncle Silas) and a mini-series
(Love for Lydia) known to Americans from Masterpiece Theatre.
During World War II, Bates was recruited by the Royal Air Force specifically
to write short stories about the wartime exploits of combatants, originally
published under the name of "Flying Officer X". These were later collected in
book form under Bates' own name as How Sleep the Brave. His novel of
wartime Burma, The Purple Plain, was made into a 1954 film starring
Gregory Peck. Paper clip impression at top edge. Toned. Corners lightly worn.
