Program signed: "Herbert Lom" in black felt tip.16 pages, 5½x8½. London, England, circa 1953. Program for the stage musical The King and I, performed at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, London. Signed on page 4, beside photo reproduction (blue-hued b/w, 3x3½) of Lom as The King. The King and I debuted at London's St. James Theatre in 1951, with Yul Brynner as The King. It had another highly successful run (926 performances) at the Theatre Royal in 1953, with Herbert Lom as the King opposite Valerie Hobson as Anna. Czech stage actor Herbert Lom (1917-2012) moved to England in1938. He was cast twice as Napoleon in The Young Mr. Pitt, (1942); War and Peace (1956). Other strong roles included Captain Nemo in The Mysterious Island (1961), Moslem leader Ben Yussuf in El Cid (1961), and the title role in The Phantom of the Opera (1962). He could play sinister villains like he did in Night and the City (1960) or comedy roles, as in the Pink Panther movies (as Peter Sellers' long-suffering boss), beginning with A Shot in the Dark (1964). Another very important role was the one he had in Ladykillers. Herbert Lom was noted for a precise, elegant pronunciation of English.Vertical fold crosses signature.
