Picture Postcard Signed: "Herbert/Marshall". Sepia 5x7, signed
in red pencil. HerbertMarshall (1890-1966) was a British
actor who got his start on the stage in 1911 and became a star in 1913's
Brewster's Millions. Shortly after this, he was shipped off to fight
in World War I and had his leg amputated after being wounded. But the loss
of a leg didn't slow down his career a bit; he just got fitted for a prosthesis
and continued acting. Marshall had a total of 6 Broadway plays between 1922 and
1932 and a total of 90 movies and TV shows between 1927 and 1965, first as a
romantic lead and later in character roles. He's probably best known as
Geoffrey Wolfe in The Moon and Sixpence (1943) and author W. Somerset
Maugham in The Razor's Edge (1946), both films based on Maugham's works.
