Herbert Rawlinson (1885-1953, born in Brighton, East Essex, England, United Kingdom) was a stage actor who moved to the silver screen in 1911. A leading man in silent films, he gradually moved to character roles when soundies made their debut, often as a criminal masquerading as a pillar of society. Rawlinson made several serials during the silent era and returned to them in 1937 with the title role in Blake of Scotland Yard. He appeared in Columbia Pictures fifteen episode serial Superman (1948) as Dr. Arnold Graham. Later he acted in the very first episode of the television series The Adventures of Superman titled Superman on Earth which aired on September 19, 1952. In it he played Rozan, the head of the Kryptonian Council on Superman's home planet of Krypton. A star is dedicated to Rawlinson on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contribution to the motion picture industry. You could say that Gladys George (1904-1954) was born into acting - or more specifically, during a Maine engagement by her parents' touring stock company. She started acting in her parents' vaudeville act at three and landed her first of six Broadway plays at 14 in The Betrothal (1918-1919). She entered the movie world in 1920 with Red Hot Dollars and went on to appear in over 40 movies and TV shows between then and 1954. Known for playing either long-suffering women or ladies of questionable morals, George earned an Oscar nomination for her lead performance as bad-girl-turned-good Carrie Snyder in the weeper Valiant Is the Word for Carrie (1936). Other notable movies include woman-done-wrong Jacqueline Fleuriot in the tear-jerker Madame X (1937), Panama Smith in The Roaring Twenties (1939) and Iva Archer, the unfaithful wife of Sam Spade's partner Miles Archer, in The Maltese Falcon (1941).
