HERBERT R. O'CONOR
The United States Senator of Maryland sends a letter to Ralph E. Ward
with an autograph for his collection.
Collection: 1) Typed Letter signed: "Herbert R. O'Conor" as U.S. Senator, 1 page,
8x10½. Washington, D.C., 1947 March 12. On his United States Senate,
Committee on Expenditures in the Executive Departments letterhead addressed to
Mr. Ralph E. Ward, Jr., Melrose Highlands, Massachusetts. In full:
"Dear Mr. Ward: I wish to acknowledge receipt of your letter of march 11
requesting my autograph for your collection. I am happy to comply with your
request on the attached card. With kindest regards, Sincerely yours,"
2) Signature: "Herbert R. O'Conor/U.S. Senate", 5x3 yellow
lined card. Affixed at bottom margin of the letter (2 surfaces). Letter affixed
to an 8½x11 page (2 surfaces). 3) Original United States Senate mailing
envelope with O'Conor's stamped frank. Postmarked Washington, D.C., March
13, 1947. Affixed to verso of the 8½x11 page (2 surfaces). Herbert Romulus
O'Conor (1896-1960, born in Baltimore, Maryland) was a Democrat who served
as Attorney General (1934) and then Governor of Maryland
(1939-1947). O'Conor was the first Roman Catholic of Irish descent to hold
that position. He was later elected U. S. Senator from Maryland
(1947-1953).From the collection Ralph Errington Ward
(1926-2009) a fighter pilot and squadron commander in the China-Burma-India
Theater of World War II. Ward became President and CEO of Cheseborough-Ponds,
Inc., transforming the cosmetics firm into a major home product conglomerate. 1)
Normal mailing folds. Slightly creased. Lightly soiled. Otherwise, fine

edges. Edges lightly frayed. Slightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
