Inscribed publicity photo, in suit and tie, holding a baton
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Shirley Jeane/With best wishes/Herbie Kay". Sepia, 8x10, captioned at lower margin. Herbie Kay (1904-1944) led a popular, Chicago-based sweet band of the 1930s and early 1940s. Kay had a nationally broadcast radio show, but because the sponsor was Fleischman's Yeast, the band was saddled with the name The Yeast Foamers. The band's theme song was "Violets." Its most famous name was Dorothy Lamour, who began singing with Kay in 1931. The marriage ended in 1939, shortly after Lamour departed for Hollywood film stardom. Surface and edges at corners missing and damaged from previous mounting. Toned, soiled creased.
