HERBY CLARKE
Signed photo of the South African lightweight champ in boxing stance,
inscribed to a fan (6½x8½). Extremely rare!
Inscribed photograph signed: "Best wishes/Norman/Herby Clarke"
in blue ink. B/w, 6½x8½. Herby Clarke (b.1943) became the
lightweight boxing champion of South Africa in 1966 in his title bout against
Andries Steyn. He held the title for three subsequent years before losing it
to Arnold Taylor in the 1969 title fight where Clarke was disqualified for
biting. A rematch was set just a month after the disqualification, yet
this time, Taylor beat Clarke fair and square by points. Following the loss of
his title belt, Clarke's ambition declined, and after 1972 he retired from the
sport. He finished with a record of 15-7-1 with 5 KO wins. Creased.
Corners and edges worn. Lightly bowed. Ink notes in lower margin. Pencil notes
on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
