5¼x3¼ image
Original art signed: "Herc/Ficklen", in black ink, 5¼x3¼. Cartoonist Herc
Ficklen (1911-1980) became interested in art as a child, and eventually took a
job as a copy boy at The Dallas Morning News to get into the world of
newspaper cartoons. He worked there for six years, eventually being promoted to
the art department and landing his own regular cartoon in 1937. He left the
publication briefly to serve in the Army during WWII, and returned to the News
after his service, remaining with them for 30 more years. His cartoons ran in
regular publication alongside fellow cartoonist John K. Knott, with both
cartoonists being highly regarded as important figures in the cartoon world. His
comic strips Lonely Heart and Out of Orbit were both printed from
1968-1979. Slightly soiled. Light surface crease on left edge. Corners slightly
worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
