HERMAN BERNSTEIN. ALS: "Herman Bernstein.", 1p, 8½x10¼. New York City, 1924 April 23. On his personal imprinted letterhead to "Rev. Anthony R. Parshley, St. Paul's Protestant Episcopal Church, Lancaster, New Hampshire". Begins: "My dear Sir". In full: "In accordance with your request, I am glad to send you my signature. Sincerely Yours". In 1924, Bernstein became an editor of "The Jewish Tribune" (1924-1926, 1930), and he published Celebrities of Our Times, the first of three volumes of his interviews with prominent people of the day. Journalist, author, translator and diplomat Herman Bernstein (1876-1935), who had been born on the Russo-German border, immigrated to the U.S. in 1893 and began publishing his first stories seven years later, appearing in such publications as the "New York Evening Post", "The Nation", "The Independent" and "Ainslee's Magazine". Bernstein was also a founder of "The Day" (1914-1916) and an editor at "The Jewish Daily Bulletin" (1933-1934). He is best known for his work as a correspondent - first for the "New York Times", traveling to Europe in 1908, 1909, 1911, 1912 and 1915, and then for the "New York Herald", traveling to Russia in 1917 to cover the Revolution and to France in 1919 to attend the Paris Peace Conference. He had his biggest journalistic coup while with the "Herald" - publishing previously secret 1904-1907 telegrams between Wilhelm II and Nicholas II. A supporter of Herbert Hoover in the 1928 election, Bernstein was appointed as U.S. Minster to Albania by the President, serving from 1930-1933.
