HERMAN BING
Extremely Rare! Smiling 3½x5½ printed caricature of the German
character and voice actor
Printed Art inscribed and signed in ink: "To Perry/Herman
Bing/6/7/37", 3½x5½. Original portrait by "Wolo" (1927). Herman Bing
(1889-1947), a scriptwriter and assistant director to German director F. W.
Murnau, came to Hollywood with Murnau in 1926, working with him on the
classic film Sunrise (1927). He also worked off screen with John Ford
and other directors, but moved on to an acting career, specializing in
dialect roles, many of them comic. He had small scenes in many famous films,
including A Farewell to Arms and Dinner at Eight. He worked in
burlesque, and became a voice actor in Disney animations, including
Dumbo (as the Ringmaster, 1941). Suspected of Nazi sympathies, he
found work hard to find during World War II, and committed suicide in 1947. He
was the brother of longtime Metropolitan Opera general manager Sir Rudolf
Bing. Toned. Soiled. Corners worn and creased, esp. top right corner. Ink
splatter on date. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso. Adhesive and mounting
residue on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
