HERMAN CHARLES MERIVALE
Merivale dated, handwrote and signed this letter to "My dear Walter"
in 1878 about a trusteeship and the problems surrounding it.
Autograph letter signed "Herman C Merivale". 2 pages, 4¼x7, 1 sheet,
front and verso. Kingston-on-Thames, London, England, Oct. 10, 1878.
Addressed to "My dear Walter". Merivale wrote this letter about a
trusteeship, as well as the problems surrounding it: "The lawyers demand
£25 for a stamp! And I can't afford it. I believe
we should shun mailing 'legal arrangements' of any kind whatsoever." Merivale (1839-1906) was
an English dramatist and poet who often wrote under the psuedonym Felix Dale.
You could say that writing ran in his family. His relatives included historians
Herman Merivale, his father, and Charles Merivale, his uncle, and poet John
Herman Merivale, his grandfather. Despite this, Merivale started his
professional life as a lawyer and civil servant, possibly to the dismay of his
literary relatives. But he quit the law in 1874, when his father died, and took
up writing. Merivale wrote farces and burlesques as well as drama. His
theatrical works include The Lady of Lyons Married and Settled, Called
There and Back, The Butler and The Don. Lightly toned and
soiled. Page was neatly removed from pad or notebook on left edge, with adhesive
residue. Folded once and unfolded. Otherwise in fine
condition.
