The famed polymer science chemist send letter of thanks to a colleague, signs name in black ink
Typed letter signed: "H. Mark" in black ink. 1 page, 8½x11. Written Polytechnic Institute of New York letterhead. New York City, New York. October 24, 1979. Addressed to Professor Hans-Georg Gilde of Marietta College's Department of Chemistry. In full: "Many thanks for your kind letter of October 18, 1979 and for your good wishes. It was, indeed, an honor for me to have been chosen as the recipient of the Wolf Foundation Prize in Chemistry. Please accept my kindest personal regards and best wishes. As always, I am, Very sincerely yours". Herman Francis Mark (1895-1992) was an Austrian-American chemist, best known for his contributions to the development of polymer science. His x-ray diffraction work on the molecular structure of fibers provided important evidence for the macromolecular theory of polymer structure; together with Houwink he formulated an equation, now called the Mark-Houwink equation, describing the dependence of the intrinsic viscosity of a polymer on its relative molecular mass (or molecular mass). He was awarded the Wolf Prize in Chemistry in 1979, as well as the National Medal of Science (1979), the Perkin Medal (1980), and the Charles Goodyear Medal (1988). Mark is also the author of Giant Molecules (1966) and Encyclopedia of Polymer Science and Technology (2007). Normal mailing folds. Lightly toned. Corners rounded. Light surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
