5½x3½. Addressed in signer's hand to W. E. Colville, McMinnville, Tennessee,
USA, postmarked March 30, 1908, Danish stamp affixed. Danish novelist
Herman Frederik Ewald (1821-1908) wrote 19 historical novels between 1860 and
1895. When Prussian armies seized his native province of Schleswig in 1864,
he moved to the city of Fredriksborg. His son, Carl Ewald, was an author
of folk tales second only to Hans Christian Andersen. Herman Frederik Ewald died
on April 29, 1908, a month after posting this letter, surviving son Carl by two
months. Heavily toned. Edges worn and torn. Ink stamps throughout. Creased. Ink
lightly smeared but legible.
