HERMAN WOUK
Handwritten letter to Barnaby Conrad thanking him for kind words about a talk and explaining that he'll visit if he's able
Autograph Letter signed: "Herman", 1 page, 5¾x3¾ card. No place, December 15, 1988. On personal letterhead to "Barnaby" [Conrad]. In full: "Your offer to show us Santa is interesting & appreciated! Q & A session? Unscheduled, conceivably, on a drop-in basis, if Sarah & I are around in June. But it can't be counted on - I don't even know if I'll get to The Grove  - Thanks for kind words about my talk". Herman Wouk (1915-2019) won the 1952 Pulitzer Prize in fiction for The Caine Mutiny. The book became a Broadway play and the 1954 film version, starring Humphrey Bogart as Captain Queeg, was nominated for six Academy Awards. Wouk's other works include the best-sellers Marjorie Morningstar (1955), Youngblood Hawke (1962), The Winds of War (1971) and War and Remembrance (1978). All these works became films or - in the case of the latter two - a TV mini-series. Wouk's honors include the Guardian of Zion Award (1998) and the first Library of Congress Lifetime Achievement Award for fiction (2008). American author Barnaby Conrad founded the annual Santa Barbara Writers' Conference and ran it through 2004. Fine condition.
