Autograph Letter signed: "Herman", 1 page, 5¾x3¾ card. No place, December 15, 1988. On
personal letterhead to "Barnaby" [Conrad]. In full: "Your offer to show us Santa is interesting &
appreciated! Q & A session? Unscheduled, conceivably, on a drop-in basis, if Sarah & I are around
in June. But it can't be counted on - I don't even know if I'll get to The Grove - Thanks for kind
words about my talk". Herman Wouk (1915-2019) won the 1952 Pulitzer Prize in fiction
for The Caine Mutiny. The book became a Broadway play and the 1954 film version,
starring Humphrey Bogart as Captain Queeg, was nominated for six Academy Awards.
Wouk's other works include the best-sellers Marjorie Morningstar (1955), Youngblood
Hawke (1962), The Winds of War (1971) and War and Remembrance (1978). All these
works became films or - in the case of the latter two - a TV mini-series. Wouk's honors
include the Guardian of Zion Award (1998) and the first Library of Congress Lifetime
Achievement Award for fiction (2008). American author Barnaby Conrad founded the
annual Santa Barbara Writers' Conference and ran it through 2004. Fine condition.
