HERMAN WOUK
The author signs this typed letter to Stella Hershan, author of The Candles She Lit
Typed letter signed: "Herman Wouk", 1p, 6¾x9¾. Washington, D.C., February 24, 1983.
On letterhead of BSW Literary Agency to Ms. Stella K. Hershan, New York, N.Y. In full:
"Thanks for a generous letter about the television drama of THE WINDS OF WAR. I'm very
glad it gave you pleasure. Unfortunately I did not have the honor of knowing Mrs. Roosevelt.
Sincerely". Accompanied by matching envelope with typed address of Ms. Hershan. The The
Winds of War, Wouk's 1971 best-selling novel, was made into a TV miniseries. Herman
Wouk (1915-2019) won the 1952 Pulitzer Prize in fiction for The Caine Mutiny. The
book became a Broadway play and the 1954 film version, starring Humphrey Bogart as
Captain Queeg, was nominated for six Academy Awards. Wouk's other works include the
best-sellers Marjorie Morningstar (1955), Youngblood Hawke (1962), The Winds of War
(1971) and War and Remembrance (1978). All of these works became films or - in the case of
the latter two - TV miniseries. Wouk's honors include the Guardian of Zion Award (1998)
and the first Library of Congress Lifetime Achievement Award for fiction (2008). Stella
Hershan wrote both a biography of Eleanor Roosevelt and The Candles She Lit (1993), a
collection of reminiscences by persons who had known the First Lady personally. Lightly
toned. Normal mailing folds. Otherwise, fine condition.
