Signed Autograph Letter in German (1973), replying to congratulations on his
elevation to Cardinal
Autograph Letter signed: "+ Hermann Kard. Volk", as Bishop of
Mainz, 1 page, 8½x11. Mainz (West German), 1973 March 15. On
his official letterhead with coat of arms. In German, translated in full:
"You have expressed your congratulations and blessing for my acceptance
to the College of Cardinals. I thank you very much for that. I returned to Mainz
again, but without a doubt with yet increased responsibility. Therefore your
blessings are most appreciated by me. With the best greetings and wishes for
yourself I remain your very obedient". German Catholic prelate Hermann
Cardinal Volk (1903-1988) entered the priesthood in 1927. He received a
doctorate in theology from the University of Fribourg (Switzerland) in 1938, and
taught theology at the University of Munster. He was Bishop of Mainz
(1962-1982), and elevated to cardinal in 1973. Volk was a strong advocate
of the ecumenical movement. He participated in the election of Popes John
Paul and John Paul II. Vertical and horizontal mailing folds. Fine
condition.
