She signs an original drawing of herself, which has also been signed by the
artist, Dorothy Ahrens.
Original Art signed: "Herva Nelli", 10¾x14 card stock. Also signed:
"D. A. Ahrens/1955" (very small ink lettering, at lower right edge of
drawing). Pencil drawing of Nelli (7x8, one surface). Italian-born soprano
HERVA NELLI (1909-1994) emigrated with her family to the US in 1921. She
made her opera debut with Brooklyn's Salmaggi Opera in 1937. (Her farewell
performance in 1962 was with the Brooklyn Opera.) From 1947 to 1953, she sang on
a series of televised concerts with the NBC Orchestra, directed by Toscanini.
She was part of the Metropolitan Opera company from 1953 to 1961. In retirement,
Nelli gained a reputation as a skilled chef. Artist DOROTHY AHRENS made
drawings of performers, mostly musicians, during the 1940s and 1950s, and asked
the performers to autograph them. Lightly toned. Lightly worn at upper margin.
