Price: $280.00
HERVEY ALLEN. TLS: "Hervey Allen", 1p, 8½x6¾.
Charleston, S.C., 1923 October 26. To Mrs. Anna Catherine Markham,
Secretary, The Poet Society of America, West Brighton, New York. In full:
"Attached you will find an announcement which may be of interest. Thanks for
your generous mention of the 'Blindman Prize' in the last issue of the always
valued Bulletin. May I ask you to correct an error in the mailing
list of the Poetry Society of America, where my name appears twice? Take off
the 'Allen Hervey, Porter Military Academy, as this is simply a reversal of my
name and I am now getting two Bulletins instead of one. With very best wishes to
you and Mr. Markham, Very sincerely". Attachment not present. American
author Hervey Allen (1889-1949), born William Hervey Allen, is best known for
his 1933 novel, Anthony Adverse, which was made into a feature film.
A veteran of WWI, Allen began his literary career as a poet while
recovering from being gassed while in combat. His best known poem, "The
Blindman", was published in "North American Review" in 1919, but as Allen
was becoming a major poet (1920), he retreated from his fame and almost entirely
gave up writing poetry during the 1930s. His other noted works include a
series of historical novels, The Disinherited, about Colonial
America. He completed three volumes in the series, The Forest and the
Fort (1943), Bedford Village (1944) and Toward the
Morning (1948), and Allen also wrote Israfel (1926), a biography
of Edgar Allan Poe. Lightly creased with folds, light vertical crease at the
"rv" of Hervey. Lower portion of sheet and portion of upper right blank corner
have been torn away. One-inch tear at upper right blank corner, ¾-inch tears at
lower right and bottom margins. Reinforced with tape on verso (minor show
through). Light show through of ink note (probably in Markham's hand) at upper
left margin, which has light paper clip impression. Overall, fragile
condition.
