HILARY ABNER HERBERT
Confederate officer Hilary Abner Herbert wrote this letter from Minett, Ontario, Canada in 1911 to ask for a statement from an unidentified general about the American Civil War.
Autograph letter signed "HA Herbert". Pencil notations in top left corner and on verso, both in unknown hand. 1 page, 8x10. Minett, Ontario, Canada, July 18, 1911. In full: "Dear General I am availing myself of your kind offer, recently, to help me, but this time in another, though kindred matter. I am engaged in writing & have nearly complete a booklet on the Abolition Crusade & its consequences. The principal part of it, the crusade from 1831 to 1861, is practically com-plete - I shall add one short chapter each about the civil war and re-construction, and it will be a great favor if your will send me a con-servative statement, with citation of authority, about the relative forces Union & Confederate and some short comment about the failure of Northern critics to minimize the disparity. - Hope this will not be too much trouble - We are well and Mr [illegible] join me in kind regards to you and yours. Faithfully yours". Herbert (1834-1919), a former Captain of the Greenville Guards and a Colonel in the Confederate Army, was a Democratic Congressman from Alabama (1877-1893). In Congress, he served as the Chairman of the Committee on Naval Affairs before becoming President Grover Cleveland's Secretary of the Navy (1893-1897). Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Light tears in left, right and bottom edges. Light nicks in top and left edges. Rounded bottom corners. Otherwise in fine condition.
