Secretary of the Navy Hilary Abner Herbert signed this typed letter on Secretary of the Navy stationery to a Baltimore, Maryland autograph hunter in 1896.
Typed letter signed "HA Herbert". 1 page, 5½x9, 1 sheet folded, stationery of the Office of the Secretary of the U. S. Navy Department. Feb. 27, 1896. Addressed to Mr. H. Hough, Baltimore, Maryland. In full: "My dear Sir: Your collection of autographs must be very interesting, and I take much pleasure in adding mine. Very sincerely yours,". Herbert (1834-1919), a former Captain of the Greenville Guards and a Colonel in the Confederate Army, was a Democratic Congressman from Alabama (1877-1893). In Congress, he served as the Chairman of the Committee on Naval Affairs before becoming President Grover Cleveland's Secretary of the Navy (1893-1897). Lightly toned, soiled, stained and creased. Mounting residue and paper loss on verso (do not show through to letter). Pen dribbled in places while writing signature, which is lightly beaded but legible. Rounded corners and missing bottom left corner. Light tear at top of spine and light nick at bottom. Otherwise in fine condition.
