Secretary of the Navy Hilary Abner Herbert signed this typed letter to author and Robert Burns scholar James D. Law in 1895, saying that he was "sure that we both feel content not that we have run down the quotation."
Typed letter signed "HA Herbert". Red pencil marks on bio and lead pencil marks on verso in unknown hand. 1 page, 8x10½, on Navy Department stationery, with two binder holes at left edge. April 3, 1895. Addressed to James D. Law, Esq. Camden, New Jersey. With 4¼x1 bio affixed to bottom right corner. In full: "My dear Mr. Law: I have yours of the 1st inst., and am sure that we both feel content not that we have run down the quot-ation. I forgot to say in my last that I know Mr. Smith quite well, and have often talked with him about Burn, although I have not seen him for some time now, as our lines do not run in the same direction. When I was in the House I saw him very frequently. Yours very sincerely". JAMES D. LAW was aScottish immigrant to the United States and the author of several books, including Dreams o' Hame, The Seashore of Bohemia, Lancaster, Old and New and Here and There in Two Hemispheres. He was also a scholar of Robert Burns and Scottish literature in general. HILARY ABNER HERBERT (1834-1919),a former Captain of the Greenville Guards and a Colonel in the Confederate Army, was a Democratic Congressman from Alabama (1877-1893). In Congress, he served as the Chairman of the Committee on Naval Affairs before becoming President Grover Cleveland's Secretary of the Navy (1893-1897). Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Signature has bled lightly. Adhesive residue around bio. Mounting residue on verso with light show-through (do not touch signature). Folded once horizontally and twice vertically and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
