HILDE WAGENER
Youthful 3½x5½ image of the Austrian actress, sipping from a cocktail
glass, calling 1940 a happy year.
Photograph signed: "A Happy Year/1940/Hilde Wagener". B/w,
3½x5½. Stage and screen actress Hilde Wagener (1904-1992) performed on
stages in Vienna and her native Hannover before making her silent film debut in
1923. Noteworthy was her starring role in Robert Siodmak's Burning Secret
(1933). She remained in Austria during World War II, not banned from the stage
but devoting much of her time to hospital nursing. She remained in screen and TV
roles, often matronly parts, through the 1970s. She founded a charitable group,
Artists Helping Artists. She was married to actor Otto Tressler. Noted director
Georg Tressler was her stepson. Edges lightly toned and worn. Corners lightly
worn. Pencil note (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine
condition.
