HILDEGARD BEHRENS
Small 4¾x7
b/w photo by J. Heffernan of soprano Hildegard Behrens and tenor Placido Domingo in Tosca, signed by Behrens with her "best wishes!".
Inscribed photograph signed "To Don [illegible]/best wishes!/Hildegard Behrens". B/w, 4¾x7 overall, 4x5¾ image, one surface. Captioned: "HILDEGARD BEHRENS/and/PLACIDO DOMINGO/'TOSCA'/METROPOLITAN OPERA". Photo by J. Heffernan. Known for a warm yet strong voice and crackerjack acting, German dramatic soprano Behrens (1937-2009) made her name with her ability to tackle power roles like Brünnhilde in Wagner's Ring Cycle, Strauss' Elektra and Salomé and Wagner's Tristan und Isolde, with performances that suggested vulnerability in even the toughest heroines. She made her debut in 1971, but didn't hit the big time until conductor Herbert von Karajan heard her rehearsing for Berg's Wozzeck during the 1975-1976 season. Von Karajan, after hearing her audition, put her in the title role of Salomé at the 1977 Salzburg Festival. During the 1980s and 1990s, Behrens was often called one of the greatest living interpreters of Wagner; she became the star Wagner singer at the Metropolitan Opera, where she sang from 1976 to 1999, and at the Bayreuth Festival. Lightly bowed. Signature has low contrast in places but is legible. Light impressions and scratches (not visible head-on). Otherwise in fine condition.
