HILDEGARD BEHRENS
The German soprano is shown from the chest up in this 4¼x5¾ black and
white photograph.
Photograph signed: "Hildegard Behrens", B/w 4¼x5¾. Known
for a warm yet strong voice and crackerjack acting, German dramatic soprano
Behrens (1937-2009) made her name with her ability to tackle power
roles like Brünnhilde in Wagner's Ring Cycle, Strauss' Elektra and
Salomé and Wagner's Tristan und Isolde, with performances that
suggested vulnerability in even the toughest heroines. She made her debut in
1971, but didn't hit the big time until conductor Herbert von Karajan heard her
rehearsing for Berg's Wozzeck during the 1975-1976 season. Von Karajan,
after hearing her audition, put her in the title role of Salomé at the
1977 Salzburg Festival. During the 1980s and 1990s, Behrens was often called
one of the greatest living interpreters of Wagner; she became the star
Wagner singer at the Metropolitan Opera, where she sang from 1976 to 1999, and
at the Bayreuth Festival. Lightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
