HILDEGARDE
The performer signed this handwritten letter from Puerto Rico
Autograph Letter signed: "Hildegarde", 7¼x10. San Juan, Puerto Rico, Dated August 8, 1966. On stationary for the Sheraton Hotel Puerto Rico. To "Dear Helen". In full: "Forgive me for not writing sooner--but when I received your letter I was still in London--and since coming back I have been 'on the road' again--worship & loving every minute but…so busy--and no time to take care of my correspondence. Please understand. You had asked when I would come back to Boston again--Alas! To Boston I don't know--but near Boston--at the Montecello in Fromingham--from Sept. 8 for 2 weeks. I am thrilled--and hope all my wonderful friends in and around Boston and Fynn will come to see me. I hope you will be well enough to--dear. I was so sorry to hear you lost the use of your right leg--oh! I am sorry--and hope and pray you are accepting this affliction as God's will, and therefore getting the necessary focus for your sanctification. God Bless you--and I'll be happy to see you--your friends and relations!! Again Sincerely." Hildegarde Loretta Sell (1906-2005) was popularly known by her last name only or simply as "The Incomparable Hildegarde". A classically trained pianist who played in vaudeville from 1926, she emerged as a popular singer in the 1930s and 1940s with hits that included "Darling, Je Vous Aime Beaucoup" (written by her manager Anna Sosenko), "The Last Time I Saw Paris" and "I'll Be Seeing You". She also had a popular radio program, Hildegarde's Raleigh Room. The international stardom that Hildegarde achieved as a live cabaret singer is unparalleled. She was renowned around the world and, having never married, had many admirers. Some of her many showmanship innovations include wearing sleeves at every performance and going by only her first name. These unique calling cards, as well as her incredible voice and flirtatious manner, broke new ground on the evening club circuit. In 1961, she published her autobiography: Over 50…So What! Normal mailing folds. Lightly creased and toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
