"Locust./These things seek each other, the moment they are able to use their wings; after their
union the female lays her eggs in a hole she makes in the earth, and for this purpose she seeks soft
sandy earth rather than that, that has been cultivated;/ [sic]The eggs lie all winter, till the
warmth of spring calls them into life./ Heat and dryness are favorable to the increase of the locust;
These insects used to do a great deal of damage [sic] They used to destroy farms and everything
that they would come to in their march for they would go like an army in great drove [sic] and
cover the earth destroying everything almost: we have some locust [sic] in day but they are not so
numerous as they were then and I do not know that they are the same kind that they used to
have, but I would suppose they were;/ I have read of them, where they were so thick that when
they would rise to fly they would make it so dark that people had to light their candles to see how
to eat." Labeled "Pana Graded School/ no, 60." on verso. Signer merits further research. Two
small pin holes along fold. Lightly toned. Small tears along folds. Otherwise, fine condition.
