HOAGY CARMICHAEL
Signature: "Hoagy Carmichael", 4½x4 album leaf. While studying to be a
lawyer at Indiana University, Hoagy Carmichael (1899-1981) wrote two tunes,
"Washboard Blues" and "Boneyard Shuffle", for a band called Curtis Hitch's Happy
Harmonists. The songs were recorded (with Carmichael on piano) for Gennett
Records in 1924. In 1952, the composer won the Academy Award for Best
Song for "In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening". Other songs written by
Carmichael include the standards, "Stardust", "Georgia on My Mind" and "Heart
and Soul". Carmichael, who occasionally performed his songs (accompanying
himself on the piano or sometimes the trumpet), appeared as a character actor
in 14 films, including To Have and Have Not (1944), which starred
Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall (in her movie debut). Ink lightly beaded at
the "ael" of Carmichael. Irregularly cut at upper and lower right corners,
irregular left edge from removal from bound book. Minor show-through of mounting
strip on verso at blank left margin. Overall, fine
condition.
