HOBART BOSWORTH
Vintage photograph inscribed to Warner Bros. executive "Doc" Salomon, showing the actor sitting on top of a horse.
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Doc Salomon/from/Hobart Bosworth/+"Cameo"/1929". Sepia,10x8. HOBART BOSWORTH (1867-1943) starred on Broadway in the late 19th century. Moving into silent films, he starred in the first major movie filmed on the West Coast, In the Sultan's Power (1909). In 1913 he formed his own production company in order to film a series of Jack London's stories, beginning with The Seawolf. Bosworth, Inc. was absorbed into Paramount in 1916. Bosworth was thus an important founding figure in Hollywood film. He continued movie acting for the rest of his life, playing character parts in talking films (usually a kindhearted older man but occasionally a villain). A. M. "Doc" Salomon, a friend of studio mogul Jack Warner, who rose to head the London branch of Warner Bros. studios, compiled an extensive collection of celebrity autographs during his nearly 30 years with the studio. A V-1 rocket demolished his London studio in July 1944 and killed Salomon, but his photo collection miraculously survived. Heavy mounting residue on verso. Corners and edges lightly creased and worn. Printing defects. Otherwise, fine condition.
