HOBART BOSWORTH
The Broadway star signs a black and white photograph explaining his
family motto.
Photograph signed: "My family motto is/Animus Valet,/(The Spirit
Prevails)/I have ordered my life/by it, & it has not failed me./Hobart
Bosworth/and Cameo/March 6 -/1942", B/w 8x10. Hobart Bosworth
(1867-1943) starred on Broadway in the last 19th century. Moving into
silent films, he starred in the first major movie filmed on the West
Coast, In the Sultan's Power (1909). In 1913 he formed his own
production company in order to film a series of Jack London's stories,
beginning with The Seawolf. Bosworth, Inc. was absorbed into Paramount in
1916. Bosworth was thus an important founding figure in Hollywood film.
He continued movie acting for the rest of his life, playing character parts in
talking films (usually a kindhearted older man but occasionally a villain).
Light creases and pinholes at corners. Otherwise, fine
condition.
