Signature: "Hoke Smith/Secretary Interior/1896.", 4¼x2½. Democrat Hoke Smith
(1855-1931), an Atlanta lawyer and newspaper owner, was President Grover Cleveland's
Secretary of the Interior from 1893-1896. (A strong supporter of Cleveland's adherence to
the gold standard, he resigned from the Cabinet when "free silver" advocate William Jennings
Bryan secured the Democratic Presidential nomination. He later served as Governor of
Georgia (1907-1909 and 1911) and U.S. Senator from Georgia (1911-1921). As Governor,
he implemented progressive reforms such as railroad regulation and public school funding, but
also implemented harsher "Jim Crow" laws disenfranchising Georgia's African-Americans.
Slightly soiled at upper blank margin. Mounting remnant on verso (no show through). Fine
condition.
