HOMER CALVIN DAVENPORT
Cartoonist Homer Calvin Davenport signed this letter, written on New York Evening Mail stationery, to accept an invitation.
Autograph letter signed "Homer Davenport". Lead pencil notations top and bottom left corners and red ink mark in bottom left corner, all in unknown hand. 1 page, 8½x11, on New York Evening Mail stationery. Dated "April 12." Addressed to Mr. Edward E. Higgins. In full: "My Dear Sir, With a great deal of pleasure do I accept your invitation to the Periodical dinner Yours". Influential American political cartoonist Davenport (1867-1912) was once the United States' highest paid cartoonist. He worked at the William Randolph Hearst papers San Francisco Examiner and New York World at the end of the 19th Century before moving on to Harper's Magazine. A Progressive, hishighly detailed caricatures nevertheless attacked politicians in both the Democratic and Republican Parties (although he did tend to blunt his attacks when it came to fellow Progressive Theodore Roosevelt); he even lampooned himself and his boss Hearst. Davenport's sway was so great that New York Senator Thomas Platt even introduced a bill to outlaw political cartoons in 1898. Davenport responded with one of his most famous cartoons in the World, comparing Platt to New York City's notorious Boss Tweed. Lightly toned and creased. Missing bottom right corner. Light tear in left edge. Light nicks in left edge and bottom left corner. Folded once vertically and twice horizontally and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
