Typed Letter signed: "Homer E. Capehart" as US Senator, 1 page, 8x½, affixed to an 8½x11
page which also bears a transmittal envelope with Capehart's stamped frank. Washington,
D.C., July 31, 1945. On letterhead of the Senate Committee on Interstate Commerce to
Ralph Errington Ward, Washington, District of Columbia. In full: "I am indeed happy to send
you my autograph as requested in your letter received July 30, 1945. Sincerely". Homer Earl
Capehart (1897-1947), a veteran of WWI, is known as "the father of the jukebox industry"
for developing the Simplex mechanism for automatically changing records (his company,
Packard, was eventually bought by Wurlitzer). By the end of World War II, there were over 2
million jukeboxes in service in the US. In 1938. Capehart hosted a "Cornfield Conference" on
his farm, a meeting which helped revitalize the Republican Party in the Midwest. Elected to
the U.S. Senate from Indiana in 1945, he served three full terms, narrowly losing a fourth
bid in 1962. He sponsored funding of housing for military families and advocated clean air
legislation. He was among the first to warn of the danger of the relationship between
Cuba and the U.S.S.R., years before the Bay of Pigs and Cuban Missile Crisis. From the
collection of Ralph Errington Ward (1926-2009) a fighter pilot and squadron commander in
the China-Burma-India Theater of World War II. Ward went on to become President and
CEO of Cheseborough-Ponds, Inc., transforming the cosmetics firm into a major home
product conglomerate. Multiple mailing folds. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
