HOMER FERGUSON and ALEXANDER WILEY
The Republican Senators and their wives sign a guest book page, inscribed on
verso by art scholar Grace Pagano to cabaret signer Hildegarde Sell.
Signatures: "Homer Ferguson", "Myrtle Ferguson", "Alexander Wiley - Wis.",
"May Jenkins Wiley", "Betty Wiley Joslin", and 2 unidentified signers, one
of whom has added the inscription "to a lovely person". Also inscribed and
signed on verso: "To Hildegarde - who shines without benefit of
footlights - Grace Pagano", 2p. 9½x4¼ front and verso. No year, but titled
(unknown hand): "Sept. 20th - in Cochran Suite". An ink note identifies Ferguson
and Wiley as US Senators. HOMER FERGUSON (1889-1982) was circuit court
judge for Wayne County, Michigan (1929-1942). He was then elected to two
terms in the US Senate (1943-1955), serving as head of the Republican
Policy Committee. He introduced the Senate legislation inserting "under God"
in the Pledge of Allegiance (1954). Defeated in a bid for a third term, he
served as US Ambassador to the Philippines (1955-1956), and then returned
to the bench as judge on the US Court of Military Appeals in Washington,
D.C. (1956-1976). ALEXANDER WILEY (1884-1967) was a Republican
U. S. Senator from Wisconsin (1939-1963) and served as chairman of the
Senate Judiciary Committee (1947-1949) and Foreign Affairs Committee
(1953-1955). He was also a candidate for Governor of Wisconsin in 1936.
Myrtle (Jones) Ferguson married her husband in 1913. May Jenkins Wiley
(1883-1948) died of a heart attack while driving home from Washington, D.C. with
her husband to their home in Wisconsin. They Wileys had a son and three
daughters, one of whom was probably the Betty Wiley Joslin who has signed here.
Alexander Wiley re-married in 1952. While undated, these signatures must have
been given between early 1943, when Homer Ferguson joined colleague Alexander in
the US Senate, and August 1948, when May Wiley died. GRACE PAGANO was
Fine Arts Director for Encyclopedia Britannica. She authored Contemporary
American Painting (1946) and edited the accompanying Encyclopedia Britannica
catalog. Right edge ragged from previous binding. Toned at edges. Otherwise fine
condition.
