Emmy-winning and Oscar and Golden Globe-nominated actress Hope Lange
signed and initialed this contract in 1957 to appear on Playhouse 90 for
$5,000.
Contract signed Hope Lange" as Performer and initialed
"H.L." twice and "HL", all in blue ink. Also signed and initialed
by a representative of CBS Television in blue ink. 2 pages, 8½x11, front and
verso, carbon copy, with two riders stapled to contract. Sept. 5, 1957.
Headed: "Standard AFTRA Engagement Contract for Single Television
Broadcast/and for Multiple Television Broadcasts Within One Calendar Week".
Lange signed this contract for an appearance on the television on the anthology
Playhouse 90 on Dec. 19, 1957. Hope was to be paid $5,000 for her
appearance "CBS Theatres or Studios in Los Angeles, California." This contract
was for her role as Raiya in the episode entitled For I Have Loved
Strangers. Lange appeared in two episodes of Playhouse 90 the
following year. In the year she signed this contract, Lange appeared in two
feature films, The True Story of Jesse James and Peyton Place, for
which she would be nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award.
American actress Lange (1931-2003) appeared on the Broadway stage at age
12. Her first film role was in Bus Stop (1956), with first husband Don
Murray. She earned an Oscar and Golden Globe nomination for Best
Supporting Actress the next year for Peyton Place. Lange also won
two Emmy Awards and another Golden Globe nomination for her TV series The
Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1968-1970). Lightly creased. Staple holes and two
file holes at upper blank margin. Minor show through of type on verso. Riders
are lightly creased. Staples and staple holes at blank left margins, minor paper
loss at blank left margin of upper rider. Otherwise in fine condition.
