HOPE TEMPLE
The talented composer and songwriter pens a sentiment on this slip of paper
Autograph Sentiment Signed: "Yrs truly/ Hope Temple" 4¾x2¾ at widest points, affixed to a
4¾x3½ sheet of paper also containing a typed caption. Hope Temple (1859-1938), who was
born Alice Maude, was an Irish songwriter and composer. Temple began writing music at a
young age, producing her first composition at the age of 14. She had wanted to study piano,
but ended up giving up that dream after suffering an injury in a riding accident. A few of the
famous piano instructors under which she studied include John Francis Barnett, Edouard Silas,
André Wormser, and André Messager. In 1892, her operetta The Wooden Spoon was put
on in London. Additionally, she was briefly married to Messager, whom she had assisted
in writing his 1894 opera Mirette. Paper containing signature is toned and worn. Upper
left-hand corner clipped. One hard, centralized vertical crease. Sparse staining toward upper
left-hand edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
