HORACE A. HILDRETH
The Governor of Maine signs on the verso of a 5½x3¼ postal card.
Signature: "Horace A Hildreth/Governor of Maine 1945-1949/U.S Ambassador/to Pakistan 1953-1957" on verso of postal card, 5½x3¼. 6-cent imprinted postage with 2-cent Jefferson stamp affixed, postmarked Maine, April 21, 1974. Address label to a collector in Arizona affixed on front. Horace Augustus Hildreth (1902-1988) was the Republican Governor of Maine from 1945-1949. During his tenure, Hildreth chaired the National Governors Conference (1947-1948). A former attorney with a prestigious Boston law firm, Hildreth had begun his political career in the Maine State House of Representatives and the Maine State Senate (1943-1944). Unsuccessful in a 1948 bid for U.S. Senator from Maine, Hildreth founded Community Broadcasting Service in 1949. The company would establish the state's first television station, WABI-TV, in 1953. That year, Hildreth began his service as U.S. Ambassador to Pakistan (1953-1957). Lightly creased. Postal markings touch two lines of writing (completely legible). Tape remnant at lower blank margin on verso (light show through at lower margin on front). Slightly soiled on front. Overall, fine condition.
