Autograph sentiment signed: "Very truly yours,/ Horace Annesley Vachell" in black ink. 4½x3½ pink cardstock, affixed with ¾x1 photo of Vachell in upper left corner. Horace Annesley Vachell (1861-1955) was a well-known English author of novels, plays, short stories, essays, and autobiographical works. The first part of his professional life was spent in California, operating a land company and starting a family, and he is even credited with introducing polo to Southern California. After 17 years abroad in America, Vachell returned to England in 1900 and when on to write over 50 volumes of fiction, his most popular being The Hill (1905), as well as fourteen plays including Quinneys (1914) which would be made into a film in 1927, and The Case of Lady Camber (1915) which was the basis for the Hitchcock film Lord Camber's Ladies (1932). His autobiography, More from Methuselah (1951) was published on his ninetieth birthday. Known for his old-fashioned and distinguished appearance and manners, he was made a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. Corners and edges rounded and slightly soiled. Slightly soiled throughout. Toned. Light surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
